Error 3P9: the boiler is letting you know its service is due
3P9 isn't a fault. The boiler is telling you that it's time for its maintenance, and it will normally carry on providing heating and hot water.
What it means
Many boilers have a maintenance counter that is set at each service. When the interval is up, the display shows 3P9 as a reminder that the next service is due.
The manufacturer describes it as ‘scheduled maintenance’: it's a reminder to call the service centre, not a warning that something has broken.
Most likely causes
- The maintenance interval set on the boiler has run out.
- On its own, it doesn't indicate a fault. If the boiler is also not working properly, check whether another code is showing.
What you can check yourself
Without tools and without opening the unit.
- Check whether the boiler is working normally. If it's providing heating and hot water, you don't need to do anything else until the service.
- Check whether any other code appears alongside 3P9: that one could indicate a fault.
- Find the date of the last service on the certificate or the invoice: it will help when you book the appointment.
It's not urgent, but don't put it off: book the service. The warning is cleared during the maintenance visit, when the engineer resets the counter.
If the water heater, boiler or heat pump is leaking a lot of water: turn off the main water stopcock in your home and call us on 871 559 176. That stops the leak and saves you from water damage.
If you smell gas: turn off the gas at the shut-off valve and open the windows. Don't touch any switches or plugs, and call us from outside the property.
If the unit is smoking or getting hotter than it should: switch it off, disconnect it from the mains and call us.
If we come out
What we check and how to stop it happening again
What the engineer usually checks
- Full boiler service
- Cleaning the burner and combustion chamber
- Combustion analysis
- New interval set on the maintenance counter
How to catch it early
With a maintenance plan, the service is scheduled every year, so this warning will most likely never come up.
