The boiler display is blank
If the display won't come on, it's most likely not getting any power. The electronics or the boiler's own wiring may also have failed.
What it means
Without power, the boiler can't switch on the display or show a code: that's why no error appears.
The power may be cut off before the boiler, at the socket, the circuit or the fuse box, or inside it: the circuit board fuse, the electronics or the wiring. The same applies to electric water heaters with a display.
Most likely causes
- No power supply: a tripped circuit breaker or RCD (residual current device), or a socket with no power.
- An earth leakage in the boiler or in another appliance on the same circuit, which trips the RCD.
- Circuit board fuse, electronics or wiring in the boiler itself.
What you can check yourself
Without tools and without opening the unit.
- Check that the socket has power. If the boiler is plugged in, unplug it and plug something you know works into the same socket: a hairdryer, a charger, a lamp. If that doesn't work either, the circuit is most likely not getting power.
- Check the fuse box. If a circuit breaker or the RCD has tripped, switch it back on.
- Check the boiler's on/off switch, if it has one: it may have been switched off by accident.
If the circuit breaker or the RCD trips again, don't switch it back on: there's most likely an earth leakage, and it needs to be found. And if power is reaching the boiler and it's still off, the fault is probably inside: book an engineer.
If the water heater, boiler or heat pump is leaking a lot of water: turn off the main water stopcock in your home and call us on 871 559 176. That stops the leak and saves you from water damage.
If you smell gas: turn off the gas at the shut-off valve and open the windows. Don't touch any switches or plugs, and call us from outside the property.
If the unit is smoking or getting hotter than it should: switch it off, disconnect it from the mains and call us.
If we come out
What we check and how to stop it happening again
What the engineer usually checks
- Voltage at the socket and at the boiler's power input
- Circuit board fuses
- Component insulation testing, to locate an earth leakage
- Circuit board and internal wiring
How to catch it early
Many faults give warning signs before they stop the unit: an RCD that trips now and then, a flickering display. If you notice anything like that, tell the engineer at the annual service.

Book an engineer and give us the code and the model of your unit. That way we know what to bring.
