Some faults aren't really faults
A closed gas valve or a tripped circuit breaker stops the unit just like a fault would. Here's what each code means and what you can check yourself before booking a visit.
Often the unit is fine and the problem is what's reaching it: the gas, the electricity or the water. For each case we explain what it means, the most likely causes and what you can check yourself, without tools and without opening the unit.
If it's something like that, you can sort it out in a minute and save yourself a visit. And if it isn't, when you call us we'll already know where to start.

Boilers
The boiler fails to light
Three ignition attempts with no flame, then a safety lockout. It may be a gas supply problem.
What to check → Error 5P1 · 5P2 · 5P3The boiler won't light or loses its flame
Failed ignition attempts or flame lift-off: the gas or the flue.
What to check → Error 108 · 1P4Low heating pressure
The boiler stops because of low pressure in the circuit. The cause may be bleeding the radiators, a leak or the expansion vessel.
What to check → Error 101 · 104The boiler shuts down due to temperature
Overheating or water not circulating: closed valves, air or the pump.
What to check → Error 3P9Service due
It's not a fault: the boiler is reminding you that its service is due.
What to check →Heat pump for hot water
Abnormal temperature in the heat pump water heater
The area around the heating element is heating up too quickly. Most likely cause: limescale.
What to check → Error F4Electronic anode fault
The part that protects the tank from corrosion isn't working properly.
What to check →Heat pump for heating
Water isn't circulating through the heat pump
Circulation or pre-circulation error: valves, air or the pump.
What to check → Error 910 · 924 · 931The outdoor unit isn't responding
Communication or inverter fault. First of all, check that it's getting power.
What to check →No code
The boiler display is blank
It's most likely not getting power, although the electronics may also have failed.
What to check → No codeThe air conditioning or heat pump isn't cooling (or heating)
Before assuming it's a fault, check the mode, the temperature and the filters.
What to check → No codeThe electric water heater isn't heating
Cold water, or lukewarm water that soon runs out: power, thermostat, heating element or limescale.
What to check →Codes vary by model. The same fault can show as 108 on one boiler and as 1P4 on another. If yours isn't here, book an engineer with the code and the model and we'll tell you what it is.
If the water heater, boiler or heat pump is leaking a lot of water: turn off the main water stopcock in your home and call us on 871 559 176. That stops the leak and saves you from water damage.
If you smell gas: turn off the gas at the shut-off valve and open the windows. Don't touch any switches or plugs, and call us from outside the property.
If the unit is smoking or getting hotter than it should: switch it off, disconnect it from the mains and call us.
And if it keeps happening
A fault that keeps coming back isn't bad luck
A unit that loses pressure every couple of months, switches off now and then or heats less and less well is probably trying to tell you something. That's exactly what the annual service is for: finding it before it leaves you without hot water on a Sunday.
Can't find your code?
Book an engineer and give us the code and the model of your unit. That way we know what to bring.
