Error 910 · 924 · 931 · Heat pump for heating

Errors 910, 924 and 931: the outdoor unit isn't responding

The indoor and outdoor units have stopped communicating (910 and 924), or the outdoor unit's inverter has reported an error (931). The first thing to check is that the outdoor unit has power.

What it means

The heat pump has two parts: the outdoor unit, with the compressor and the inverter that regulates it, and the indoor unit, which controls it. They communicate through a cable.

910 is a communication fault between the inverter and its circuit board; 924, between the heat pump and the indoor unit; and 931, an error in the inverter itself.

Most likely causes

  1. No power to the outdoor unit: a tripped circuit breaker or RCD, often after a storm.
  2. A power cut or a voltage surge.
  3. The communication cable between the two units.
  4. The inverter or a circuit board. That's a job for an engineer.

What you can check yourself

Without tools and without opening the unit.

  1. Check the fuse box: the outdoor unit usually has its own circuit breaker. If it has tripped, switch it back on.
  2. Switch the unit off, wait a few minutes and switch it back on, once.
  3. Check the outside of the outdoor unit: make sure there's no water around it and no visible damage to the cable.

If the circuit breaker or the RCD trips again, don't switch it back on: there may be an earth leakage. And if the warning is still showing with the power on, book an engineer.

If any of these happen, take action before we arrive

If the water heater, boiler or heat pump is leaking a lot of water: turn off the main water stopcock in your home and call us on 871 559 176. That stops the leak and saves you from water damage.

If you smell gas: turn off the gas at the shut-off valve and open the windows. Don't touch any switches or plugs, and call us from outside the property.

If the unit is smoking or getting hotter than it should: switch it off, disconnect it from the mains and call us.

If we come out

What we check and how to stop it happening again

What the engineer usually checks

  • Supply voltage to both units
  • Communication cable and connections
  • Inverter and circuit boards
  • Compressor and its protective devices

How to catch it early

The outdoor unit's connections are exposed to sun, rain and salt air. During maintenance, they're checked before they fail.

Still not sorted?

Book an engineer and give us the code and the model of your unit. That way we know what to bring.
